Sound Vibrations

Your students will make clap sticks and learn to sing a native Yokuts traditional song. They will increase cultural appreciation and cultural awareness for our Native American population and they will learn that sound is made by vibrating materials.

Making clap sticks 

Explore vibrations and sound (Waves and their Applications in Technologies for Information Transfer 1-PS41). Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate.

The clap stick is an ancient musical instrument used by the Yokuts Tribe of California. The Clap Stick is made by splitting an Elderberry branch so that two halves of the stick can clap together. The vibrations in the wood make a clapping noise that you can use to make music.
